WOOD AND FINISHING

PLYWOOD, MANY LAYERS FOR LIGHTNESS AND STRENGTH
Plywood is a semi-finished material made from different layers of wood glued together with their fibers crosswise to each other. The standard-sized panels are sawed to make the components.
The panels we use are E1 certified, meaning that the amount of formaldeheyde in the glue is limited in accordance with ecological standards in effect.
We use 12 mm thick yesquero plywood for most of our furniture.
All of the components for the TotemBuild system and some products in our plywood series are made from birch plywood cut by laser. This technology leaves a burnt edge caused by the laser.
Birch and yesquero are similar in terms of color and veining, and can be used together because it is almost impossible to distinguish between them.

If you choose plywood…
All of our plywood furniture is sold in kits which include the finish. The finish can be natural and colorless, or colorful in vibrant red, yellow or orange. Applying the finish is simple and can be done at home. You can be creative, coloring just some parts or using a combination of different colors.
The finish is made of natural oils that protect and highlight the wood, also allowing for maintenance in the event of scratches or spots, since you can sand and refinish just the damaged area.
It is applied to the surface before the components are assembled and it is not to be diluted. It should be mixed with a stick and applied with a clean cotton rag, from top to bottom. After about an hour, anything residue that has not been absorbed is removed using a second clean and dry rag. (The rags are to be rinsed and then THROWN AWAY after use.)
There is also a great range of dimensions. The birch plywood panels can be cut by laser and used to create truly strong structures. see Our houses.

Compared to traditional furniture
- easy to assemble
- can be assembled and taken apart many times, without wearing out the joints
- lightweight (appreciated especially when you move!)
- occupies little space when unassembled
- you just need a piece of sandpaper to fix any damage
- doesn’t deteriorate since there is no chipboard
- single components can be replaced and or colored.
- they are strong, even if the wood is just 12mm thick, the jointing is reduced to a minimum and the metal parts are eliminated.

SOLID WOOD is natural, made from planks of different thicknesses and types. After the planks are cut and dried, they are used to prepare semi-finished components.
All of the wood we use comes from forests or plantations where the harvesting is planned and controlled by local governmental agencies and certification agencies which guarantee that the ecosystem is protected (see Corporate Social Responsibility) [LINK]
The two essences we use come from forests in the Amazon region of Bolivia.
Al momento realizziamo i nostri prodotti massello con due diverse essenze, entrambe provenienti dalle foreste a clima temperato della regione amazzonica boliviana.

If you choose solid wood…
Similar to oak, roble is a porous wood with rich veining which can vary from very dark to more subtle, from brown to reddish.
Tajibo is unlike other essences, it vaguely recalls walnut or rosewood but it is much heavier and stronger with closed, compact pores. It can have light colored veins or reddish/purple stripes.
The finishes for these two essences are different:
Furniture made from tajibo is treated with oil and wax, which emphasize the veining and the colors without altering the characteristics and leaving the surface opaque. Just wipe clean with a damp cloth. The oil and wax finish should be reapplied every 6 months.
Furniture in roble, does not need any finish. The wood resists perfectly over time, and becomes even lighter when exposed to the sun. A water-based finish can be applied, to protect it from bleaching. The water-based paints need not be reapplied.
Our solid wood furniture does not contain any formaldeheyde traces, and if glue is used it is vinyl glue.
The mattress supports are in solid wood, using a lighter wood called yesquero. They are meant to be used as the base for either traditional mattresses- we suggest ones made of latex or polyurethane or futons.
Naturally strong
- our solid wood furniture is made from the strongest materials available
- furniture made from tajibo is finished with three hands of natural, linseed oil finish
- we don’t stain our wood, the dark color is the natural color of the wood
- the sizing is designed to be ergonomic and functional- for example, the beds are 26 to 30 cm high, adding the width of the mattress they become 43 cm high, the same height as the seat of a chair.

PREVIOUS CATOLOGUES

ROBLE
This essence is from the family Papilionoideae, and can grow to a height of 30 meters.
This type of wood has an intense, pleasing scent, and recalls the coloration and veining of European or North American Oak. It is a porous, highly veined wood, especially when cut into rounds.
A strong and stable material, it guarantees long-lasting joints. It is finished with beeswax to protect the coloration and the veins.

TAJIBO
This essence belongs to the family Bignoniaceae and grows to a height of 25 meters.
It is recognizable in the forest thanks to its large purple flowers.
It is a very high-density, heavy wood, with closed pores that give it a very compact appearance. The dark brown, veined surface can vary in hue from black to light brown. A piece of furniture made from this wood weighs twice as much than the same piece made from a common essence of wood!
It requires the handling of an expert woodworker and special tools because of its hardness. The essential oils of tajibo make it waterproof, and thus suitable for outdoor use.
